Fabulous Freshman Wins Fourth National Title
Oregon freshman Edward Cheserek surged on the final lap to win the 10,000 meters at the NCAA track and field championships last night at Hayward Field in Eugene. He won in a personal-best 28 minutes, 30.18 seconds, smoking the field with a 53.31-second final lap. Cheserek is the first freshman to win the event since UTEP’s Suleiman Nyambui in 1979. He already has four national titles in his first year of collegiate competition winning the Cross Country championship last fall, along with the three-thousand and five-thousand meters at the indoor championships. He’ll try for his fifth title tomorrow in the outdoor five-thousand.
