Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Timbers have announced the formation of a USL Pro team that will start play next year. The team, called Timbers 2 or T2, will play home games at the University of Portland’s Merlo Field. The USL Pro league, which had 14 teams this year, is a step below Major League Soccer and allows teams to develop young players and provide additional opportunities for MLS players who don’t have prominent roles with their teams.

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Sounders will start an independent lower-division USL Pro team beginning in 2015 called Seattle Sounders FC 2 with 20 percent of the club to be owned by fans through a community trust. The team will play its games at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Washington, where the Sounders currently have their practice facility.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks have released safety Steven Terrell just two days after he was forced into action against Dallas because of injuries in Seattle’s secondary. The Seahawks have re-signed defensive lineman Greg Scruggs. Scruggs has yet to be active for a game this season as he continues to work back from a knee injury that forced him to miss the entire 2013 season.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – University of Alaska men’s hockey coach Dallas Ferguson has reached a milestone. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports Ferguson won his 100th game as Alaska’s coach Saturday night with a 5-2 win over Maine. Ferguson was hired in 2008 to lead Alaska after serving four years as an assistant.
