Siuslaw sending three to state wrestling meet

Three Siuslaw Viking wrestlers will be on the mats next week at the state 4A finals in Portland. Jose Dela Mora was the highest finisher for the Vikings at the Far West-Skyline Regionals in Coos Bay over the weekend. Dela Mora was third at 120 pounds. Two other Viking grapplers were fourth in their classes… Dylan Jennings at 285 pounds, Kainan Lane at 220.

Prep Basketball

The Siuslaw Viking girls led 33-7 at the half Friday night and never looked back in a 52-18 win over the South Umpqua Lancers. Claire Waggoner led scoring with 14 points; Elyssa Rose had seven blocked shots, ten rebounds and six points; Destinie Tatum had nine points. Elsewhere in the Far West, Brookings beat Marshfield 56-38 to remain undefeated atop the league standings. Douglas downed North Bend 46-38.

For the boys, South Umpqua went on a 26-point run in the first half, cruising to an 81-50 win. Preston Mitchell led Siuslaw with 19 points. South Umpqua’s Erik Johnson had 33.

Marshfield downed Brookings-Harbor 50-33 and North Bend remains undefeated on the year; they beat Douglas 73-24.

 Pac 12 Basketball

On the college court Saturday, UCLA powered their way to a 72-63 win over Oregon in Los Angeles to gain a 3rd place tie with the Ducks in the Pac-12. Arizona and Utah are tied at the top.

Across town, USC snapped a nine-game losing streak beating Oregon State 68-55. That dropped the Beavers into a tie with Stanford for fifth place.

College baseball underway

The college baseball season got underway over the weekend. Oregon State was in Arizona where the Beavers won two of three games. Oregon State had a ‘walk-off’ 2-1 win in the bottom of the ninth Friday for a victory over Northwestern.   Saturday, they went to ten innings before the Beavers walked off with a 4-2 win over Michigan State. Yesterday Oregon State lost to New Mexico 7-4. Those two teams meet again this afternoon.

The Oregon Ducks started their year off in the islands with two wins out of three games against Hawai’i. Friday it was a 12-run shut out win for Oregon; Saturday they came out on top 3-2. The Warriors came away with a 10-1 win yesterday. The two teams close out the four-game series this afternoon.
