PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Timbers have signed free agent midfielder Ned Grabavoy, who played last season with New York City FC. Grabavoy is Portland’s first free agent signing since joining Major League Soccer in 2011. Terms were not released. The 32-year-old Grabavoy is a 12-year MLS veteran.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The MLS Cup champion Portland Timbers acquired defender Zarek Valentin from the Montreal Impact in exchange for an international roster spot. The 24-year-old defender from Pennsylvania played under Timbers coach Caleb Porter at the University of Akron in 2009-10.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Cory Hall, former Fresno State and NFL defensive end, has been named cornerbacks coach at Oregon State. Hall was briefly a graduate assistant coach for the Beavers during practice last spring before spending last season as secondary coach at Weber State. A standout at Fresno State, Hall spent six seasons in the NFL, playing for the Bengals and the Falcons.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Dodgers have acquired minor league infielder Erick Mejia from the Mariners in exchange for pitcher Joe Wieland. Mejia has a .273 career batting average with 49 stolen bases, a home run and 42 RBIs in 133 minor league games in the Seattle organization after being signed as an amateur free agent in June 2012 out of the Dominican Republic.
