UNDATED (AP) — Oregon received a surprising No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament, joining Kansas, North Carolina and Virginia with top billing. The Ducks (28-6) beat out Michigan State for a spot on the top line. The Spartans were widely viewed as a top seed, and their win over Purdue in the Big Ten tournament final did nothing to hurt their resume. Oregon’s surprise was in keeping with one of the most unpredictable seasons ever. The top spot in The Associated Press poll changed hands six times — one short of the record.

UNDATED (AP) — Gonzaga is part of the NCAA Tournament field for the 18th straight season, this time by winning the West Coast Conference tournament. And it was clear from the decisions of the NCAA committee yesterday that the Bulldogs may have seen their streak end if they had lost the WCC tourney final. Gonzaga (26-7) earned a No. 11 seed in the Midwest Region and will face No. 6 seed Seton Hall on Thursday night in Denver. Gonzaga’s fate likely would have been one of the big questions if not for beating Saint Mary’s in the WCC title game.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Chris Wondolowski and Quincy Amarikwa scored first-half goals and the San Jose Earthquakes handed the defending MLS Cup champion Portland Timbers their first loss of the season, 2-1 yesterday in soggy conditions. San Jose, which has been in the MLS for 21 years, won its first two games of the season for the first time in team history. It was the first loss for Portland (1-1-0) since Oct. 3, 2015 — snapping a 10-game unbeaten streak.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Zack Cozart and Jake Cave hit back-to-back home runs, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-3 spring win over the Seattle Mariners yesterday. Cozart connected for a two-run shot against Nathan Karns with two out in the third inning. Cave followed with a drive to right-center. Seattle right fielder Nelson Cruz went 0 for 3 and is hitless in 13 Cactus League at-bats. Cruz was second in the American League last season with 44 home runs.
