VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Mikkel Boedker scored twice and the Colorado Avalanche moved back into playoff position with a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night. Andreas Martinsen also scored for the Avalanche, who have 76 points — one ahead of idle Minnesota for the last wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Henrik Sedin scored for Vancouver, which completed a four-game homestand at 2-2. The Canucks are 10 points back of the Avs in the wild-card race. Ryan Miller made 31 saves for Vancouver, while Semyon Varlamov stopped 28 shots for Colorado.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Leonys Martin and Luis Sardinas homered in Seattle’s 6-run third inning against San Francisco starter Jeff Samardzija, and the Mariners rallied for a 9-6 win over the Giants on Wednesday. Robinson Cano tripled, doubled and scored and Chris Iannetta had two hits and two RBIs for Seattle

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Thorns have formally signed French midfielder Amandine Henry. Henry’s move, which had been widely anticipated before it as announced Wednesday, will be complete once she finishes out her contract with her French club team and obtains the necessary documents to play in the United States.

NOME, Alaska (AP) — The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is not over, even though the winner was crowned on Tuesday. Instead, every musher on the 1,000-mile (1,600-kilometer) trail from Anchorage to Nome who hasn’t scratched is allowed to finish. Every musher reaching Nome gets a hero’s welcome. Howard Farley helped establish Nome as the finish line before the first race in 1973. He says every musher not only deserves a hero’s welcome, but they deserve to eat like kings at this weekend’s mushers’ banquet.
