Siuslaw athletes compete in home meet

Viking throwers dominated the action at yesterday’s Siuslaw Ice Breaker Track and Field Invitational.  Carissa Oliver won the discus and the javelin for the girls as well as taking second in the Shot Put.

Trent Reavis won the boys’ shot put and discus.  He was third in the javelin.

Other individual winners for the boys:  Murray Bingham in the 1500; Isaac Griffes (GRIFF-iss) the 3,000.

For the girls, Annmarie Precht won the 200 and the long jump; plus ran a leg in both of the winning relay teams.

Destinie Tatum won the 400; Morgan Bingham won the 1500; Mikaela Siegel won the 300 meter hurdles.

In addition to Precht on the relay teams, Tatum, Watkins and Kaylee Graham ran the 4-by-100; Bingham, Sierra Potter and Celie Mans ran the 4-by-400.

On the diamond…

The Lady Vikings opened the softball season on the road with a win yesterday, 5-3 over the Waldport Irish.  Heidi Jones went the distance in the circle for the win.  Siuslaw committed three errors, but put up five hits.  The Vikings first home game is set for Monday against Philomath.

Viking Baseball scored two runs on three hits, but fell on the road to the Sweet Home Huskies 6-2.  Sweet Home pitcher Danny Virtue struck out 11 Viking batters.  Siuslaw will be at the Taft Tournament over the weekend.  They have two games tomorrow, one more on Sunday and then wrap up in Lincoln County with a final game Monday.

On the basketball court…

The Oregon women started their post-season play with an 84-76 win at home over Long Beach State.  They’ll host the winner of today’s game between Fresno State and Santa Clara Monday.

The Oregon State women open the NCAA at two this afternoon in Corvallis against Troy.  The men are in Oklahoma City where they’ll face Virginia Commonwealth at 10:30 this morning.  That game will air on KCFM with the pregame show at ten.

The Oregon men are the number one seed in the west.  They’ll face Holy Cross in Spokane this afternoon at 4:30.  The pregame show on KCST is at four.
