MARINERS-INDIANS

Mariners open series in Cleveland

CLEVELAND (AP) — After a day off Monday, the Mariners begin a three-game series in Cleveland on Tuesday night.

Wade Miley is on the mound facing Indians’ right hander Carlos Carrasco.

On Sunday, Alex Rodriguez snapped his hitless skid with an early two-run homer off Hisashi Iwakuma (hee-sash-ee ee-wah-koo-mah) that sent the New York Yankees past the Seattle Mariners 4-3, ending their four-game losing streak.

Masahiro Tanaka topped Iwakuma in the first major league pitching matchup between former Japanese teammates, a game that was broadcast live on television back home — at 2 a.m. in Tokyo.

TRAIL BLAZERS-CLIPPERS

Blazers prepare for Game 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — With Sunday’s 115-94 blowout at the hands of the Clippers, the Blazers fell to 1-9 at Staples against the Clippers over the last five seasons.

Portland has also lost Game 1 in seven of their last eight playoff appearances dating to the 2000 Western Conference finals.

And they are 3-26 all-time in playoff series when losing Game 1.

Game 2 is in Los Angeles Wednesday night.

NFL-NEWS

Update on concussions case tops the news

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The plan by the NFL to settle thousands of concussion lawsuits filed by former players has been upheld by a federal appeals court in Philadelphia. The decision released by the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes almost a year after a revised deal was approved.

Critics of the settlement had argued that any deal should include future payments for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (ehn-sehf-uh-LAH’-thuh-pee), the brain decay found in dozens of former players after their deaths.

The news came as NFL teams opened their offseason preparations Monday and a number of teams announced signings.

The Seattle Seahawks say they have signed five players. The signings include cornerback Brandon Browner and center Patrick Lewis. Cooper Helfet, Steven Terrell and Mohammed Seisay also signed tenders with the team.

ALASKA-BEAR MAULING

Alaska university teacher in hospital after bear mauled him

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A teacher has been hospitalized after he was mauled by a bear during a mountaineering class in the Alaska Panhandle.

A University of Alaska Southeast spokeswoman says Forest Wagner, 35, of Fairbanks, was with a group of 12 students on Mount Emmerich near Haines, Alaska, on Monday when he was attacked. No students were hurt.

A student hiked down the mountain to get cellphone reception and call for help.

The university says Wagner was taken to Providence Hospital in Anchorage. His condition was not immediately available, but the university said he was stable.

Wagner has been coordinating and teaching in the outdoor studies program at the university since 2006, according to his biography. He teaches rock and ice climbing, backcountry navigation, glacier travel and mountaineering.
