MARINERS-ROYALS

Cano, Lind homer to help Mariners hold off Royals, 8-5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Robinson Cano and Adam Lind homered in a five-run seventh inning and the Seattle Mariners held off the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Sunday.

Cano’s two-run shot to deep right field for his 21st home run of the season extended the Mariners’ lead to 5-0. Lind hit a three-run shot, his 13th, a few batters later.

The Mariners scored five runs over the final three innings, pulling within three on Alex Gordon’s homer leading off the ninth.

Mike Montgomery (3-3) pitched 6 1/3 strong innings, giving up one run and five hits, in his first start of the season.

Dillion Gee (3-3) struggled early and picked up the loss for the Royals, giving up three runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

FEVER-STORM

Johnson hits 5 3-pointers, Fever beat Storm 93-82

SEATTLE (AP) — Shenise Johnson tied a career high with five 3-pointers and scored a season-high 18 points to lead six Indiana players in double figures as the Fever beat the Seattle Storm 93-82 on Sunday.

Tamika Catchings added 15 points, Lynetta Kizer and Devereaux Peters scored 12 apiece and Tiffany Mitchell and Erlana Larkins had 11 points each for Indiana (9-11).

Breanna Stewart’s layup late in the second quarter put the Storm up 10 points, but a four-point play by Johnson as the half expired sparked a 15-3 run that made it 55-53 with 5:16 left in the third and the Fever never again trailed.

Stewart converted a three-point play and then made a layup to pull Seattle (7-13) within eight with 3:42 to play, but Indiana’s Briann January hit a 3 to spark an 8-0 run that made it 91-75 with two minutes remaining.

The Fever, ranked eighth in the AP WNBA power poll, shot 70 percent (20 of 29) in the second half.

Stewart led the 10th-ranked Storm with 32 points and 11 rebounds.

MLS-TIMBERS-RED BULLS

Gleeson, Timbers escape with 0-0 draw against Red Bulls

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — Jake Gleeson had four saves, including a deflection in stoppage time, to help the Portland Timbers hold on for a 0-0 tie with the New York Red Bulls on Sunday night and extend their unbeaten streak to seven games.

It was Gleeson’s second consecutive shutout.

Early in injury time, New York’s Bradley Wright-Phillips dropped a pass at the top of the box to Felipe Martins who blasted a right footer, but Gleeson got just enough to roll the ball over the crossbar and preserve the clean sheet.

The Red Bulls (7-9-3) had chances, particularly in the second half, that were either thwarted by Gleeson or simply missed. Gleeson stopped a header by Sacha Kljestan in the 43rd minute, Mike Grella’s left-footed volley sailed high in the 57th and Gleeson had a sliding save on a point-blank shot by Felipe about 20 minutes later.

Portland (6-6-7), which hasn’t lost since May 15, is winless on the road this season.

ATH-US TRACK TRIALS

Doubled up. Felix finishes 4th, no chance for Olympic double

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Allyson Felix’s chance at the Olympic double is over. She was beaten out for third place by .01 seconds by a diving Jenna Prandini in the 200-meter final at U.S. Track and Field Trials Sunday.

Felix was shooting for the 200-400 double, made possible when Olympic organizers changed the schedule after a request that originated in the United States.

She made the 400-meter final, but in her signature event — the one where she was hoping to defend her Olympic title — she could not make it through.

Prandini will be joined by Tori Bowie and Deajah Stevens, who finished 1-2.

The Felix loss overshadowed a performance by Sydney McLaughlin, who finished third in 400-meter hurdles to become the first 16-year-old to make the U.S. Olympic track team in 40 years.

US TRIALS-MCLAUGHLIN

All eyes on Sydney McLaughlin in 400-meter hurdles

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — New Jersey prep star Sydney McLaughlin became the first 16-year-old in 40 years to make the U.S. Olympic track team with a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles Sunday at the U.S. Track and Field Trials.

McLaughlin joins winner Dalilah Muhammad and runner-up Ashley Spencer on the team headed to Rio. Muhammad, the silver medalist at the 2013 world championships in Moscow, finished in 52.88 seconds.

McLaughlin’s time of 54.14 was a junior world record. She will be a senior at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, next fall.

The last 16-year-old to make the team was 100-meter hurdler Rhonda Brady in 1976.
