WHITE-SOX-MARINERS

Cabrera, Frazier homer as White Sox beat Mariners 6-1

SEATTLE (AP) — Melky Cabrera hit a tie-breaking homer leading off the seventh inning, Todd Frazier added a two-run shot in the ninth and the Chicago White Sox snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

Cabrera lined his ninth home run off Seattle starter Wade Miley (6-7) to snap a 1-1 tie. J.B. Shuck added an RBI single later in the inning and Frazier capped the White Sox’s first win since July 9 with his 27th home run in the ninth. Brett Lawrie also hit a solo home run, his 12th.

Chicago starter Jose Quintana (8-8) threw six innings and his only major mistake was Robinson Cano’s 22nd home run in the fourth inning.

Miley lost his fifth straight start, his last win coming on June 7.

MAUI INVITATIONAL BRACKETS

Oregon, North Carolina can meet for Maui title

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — North Carolina and Oregon, No. 1 seeds from last season’s NCAA Tournament, lead their respective brackets for the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

Joining the Tar Heels, who lost to Villanova in the NCAA title game, in the bottom bracket are Division II Chaminade, the tournament host and North Carolina’s opening opponent. The other first-round game is UConn against Oklahoma State.

The Ducks, who lost to Oklahoma one win shy of the Final Four, will face Georgetown in the first round while Tennessee plays Wisconsin.

The games will be played Nov. 21-23 at the Lahaina Civic Center.

North Carolina is a three-time Maui champion (1999, 2004, 2008). Connecticut is the only other past champion in the field (2005, 2010).

Three of the winningest current coaches are in the field: North Carolina’s Roy Williams (3rd, 783), Tennessee’s Rick Barnes (8th, 619), and Oregon’s Dana Altman (11th, 564).

NCAA-MEN’S BASKETALL

Top-seed can choose playing site

NEW YORK (AP) — The NCAA says the top overall seed in the men’s NCAA Tournament will be able to pick its location for the first and second round and regional sites. The NCAA feels that site selection adds an incentive for top teams to push for the No. 1 overall seed.

Teams will be able to choose from eight assigned cities for the first and second round.

The eight cities hosting the first and second-round games in 2017 are Buffalo, Milwaukee, Orlando, Salt Lake City, Greensboro, Indianapolis, Tulsa and Sacramento.

The site selection adds an incentive for top teams to push for No. 1 overall beyond starting with presumably the biggest seeding in the 68-team tournament.

In previous years, sites for the round of 64 and 32 have often fed winners into two separate regionals.

SWM–US SWIM TEAM-PHELPS

Phelps chosen captain of US men’s swim for 1st time

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Michael Phelps has achieved a first heading into his fifth Olympics. He’s been chosen as a captain of the U.S. men’s swimming team.

Phelps was voted in by his teammates, along with Washington native Nathan Adrian and Anthony Ervin. Phelps owns a record 22 Olympic medals, including 18 golds. Adrian and Ervin are three-time Olympians, while Phelps’ fifth Olympic berth is the most for a U.S. male swimmer.

Serving as captains for the women’s team will be Cammile Adams, Elizabeth Beisel and Allison Schmitt. Adams is a two-time Olympian. Beisel and Schmitt are competing in their third games.

The selections were announced Tuesday in San Antonio, where the Americans are training for the Rio Games, which open August 5.
