Stewart, Loyd help Storm hand Stars 5th straight loss, 83-69

SEATTLE (AP) — Jewell Loyd scored 25 points, Breanna Stewart added 22 points and five blocked shots and the Seattle Storm beat the San Antonio Stars 83-69 Wednesday.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had 10 points, Crystal Langhorne grabbed 10 rebounds and Sue Bird had eight assists for Seattle (9-14).

Dearica Hamby converted a three-point play to trim San Antonio’s deficit to 63-59 early in the fourth quarter, but Stewart scored nine points — including two 3-pointers — and the Stars went scoreless for four-plus minutes during a 16-0 run that put the Storm up 20 with 4:33 to play.

Seattle shot 54.8 percent (17 of 31) from the field and made six 3-pointers in the second half.

Seattle has had at least 20 assists in each of its last six games.

WHITE SOX-MARINERS

Martin hits 2 HRs, drive in 11th lifts Mariners over Chisox

SEATTLE (AP) — Leonys Martin hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot with one out in the 11th inning that sent the Seattle Mariners over the Chicago White Sox 6-5 on Wednesday.

Martin hit a two-run drive in the second inning. He then drove an 0-2 pitch from Dan Jennings (3-2) over the wall in right for his 13th homer.

Vidal Nuno (1-1) pitched one inning for the victory.

Seattle pulled within 5-4 on Mike Zunino’s two-run homer in seventh. The Mariners tied it on Adam Lind’s solo shot in the eighth.

The Mariners nearly won it in the 10th. Nelson Cruz drew a two-out walk and tried to score on Kyle Seager’s double, but right fielder Adam Eaton threw out the Seattle slugger at the plate.

Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, allowed five runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two in his first start since May 27th.

MARINERS-CUBS TRADE

Cubs acquire LHP Montgomery from Mariners for 1B Vogelbach

CHICAGO (AP) — The Cubs added bullpen help by acquiring left-hander Mike Montgomery from the Seattle Mariners for first baseman and designated hitter Dan Vogelbach.

Chicago also obtained right-handed prospect Jordan Pries in Wednesday’s deal. Right-hander Paul Blackburn also goes to Seattle.

The 27-year-old Montgomery has a 2.34 ERA in two starts and 30 relief appearances with the Mariners this season. The former first round pick of Kansas City was traded to Tampa Bay in the 2012 James Shields deal, when the Cubs’ Joe Maddon was managing Tampa Bay.

MARINERS MOVES

Hernandez activated by Mariners, starts against White Sox

SEATTLE (AP) — Felix Hernandez was activated from the disabled list by the Seattle Mariners to start Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox.

Hernandez had been on the DL since May 27 because of a strained right calf. He is 4-4 with a 2.86 ERA.

Seattle recalled outfielder Norichika Aoki and catcher Mark Zunino from Tacoma. Both were in the starting lineup, with Aoki batting leadoff.

To make room, outfielder Daniel Robertson, catcher Jesus Sucre and reliever David Rollins were optioned to the Triple-A farm team.

MARINERS-LEWIS

Mariners first-round draft pick to miss rest of season

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners announced Wednesday that minor league outfielder Kyle Lewis, the team’s first-round draft pick in 2016, injured his knee and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old Lewis, a two-time Southern Conference player of the year at Mercer, was the 11th overall pick in last month’s draft.

He was injured Tuesday in a collision at home plate while playing for the Class-A Everett Aqua Sox and tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), as well as a medial and lateral meniscus in his right knee.

Lewis was hitting .299 with three homers, eight doubles, five triples and 26 RBIs in 30 games with Everett in the Northwest League.

OKC Dodgers beat Tacoma Rainiers 7-0 in Pacific NW

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Drew Maggi doubled and singled, and Jose De Leon struck out 10 hitters over eight innings as the Oklahoma City Dodgers beat the Tacoma Rainiers 7-0 on Wednesday.

De Leon (3-0) picked up the win after he allowed four hits.

Cody Martin (8-6) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs and 10 hits while striking out five in the Pacific Coast League game.

The Rainiers were held off the scoreboard for the fourth time this season, while the Dodgers’ staff recorded their seventh shutout of the year.

MLS-UNITED-WHITECAPS TRADE

Whitecaps acquire striker Fabian Espindola from DC United

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — The Vancouver Whitecaps acquired striker Fabian Espindola from D.C. United Wednesday in exchange for general allocation money.

Espindola is seventh among active MLS goal scorers with 64 regular-season goals over 10 seasons in the league. He has 73 goals and 42 assists in 252 appearances in all competitions.

Espindola first joined MLS with Real Salt Lake in 2007. He spent the 2013 season with the New York Red Bulls and the past 2 1/2 seasons with D.C. United. He has started 10 of 15 regular-season games this season, scoring four goal and adding an assist.

Espindola began his pro career in his native Argentina with Boca Juniors in 2005.
