Estrada’s gem leads Blue Jays past Mariners 3-2
SEATTLE (AP) — Marco Estrada took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, Edwin Encarnacion hit his 41st home run and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Monday night in the opener of a critical three-game series.
Estrada (9-9) had allowed only two walks before Robinson Cano led off the seventh with a line drive up the middle on a 2-1 pitch. Cano and Nelson Cruz walked in the fourth inning, but Estrada otherwise kept the Mariners off the bases.
The Blue Jays pulled even with Baltimore for the first wild-card spot. Both teams are 2 ½ games clear of Detroit and three ahead of Seattle and Houston.
Taijuan Walker (6-11) allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Roberto Osuna got his 34th save.
SEAHAWKS FINED
Pete Carroll and Seahawks fined for excessive contact in OTA
NEW YORK (AP) — Seattle coach Pete Carroll has been fined $200,000, the Seahawks have been fined $400,000 and will lose a fifth-round draft choice for violating the NFL’s work rules on contact in the offseason.
The Seahawks will forfeit the draft pick in 2017 and also lose a week of organized team activities for allowing excessive contact in an OTA on June 6. That is prohibited by the labor agreement with the players’ union.
Seahawks players will be paid for the cancelled sessions in 2017.
The league on Monday cited Carroll as “responsible for maintaining appropriate control over practices and intervening if prohibited conduct occurs.”
The decision was made after the league and the NFL Players Association independently reviewed the on-field practice video for June 6. Both sides agreed the Seahawks violated the no live contact rules.
OREGON-ALLEN
Devon Allen out for the season after ACL injury
Oregon receiver and Olympic hurdler Devon Allen will miss the rest of the season because of a left knee injury, the team confirmed Monday night.
Allen injured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 35-32 loss at Nebraska. The nature of the injury was first reported by the Duck Territory website.
Allen, who also runs track at Oregon, finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles last month at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He became the fourth active college football player in the modern era to compete in track and field at the Olympics.
The team also confirmed that left tackle Tyrell Crosby will miss the rest of the season because of a broken foot.
Allen injured his right knee at the end of his freshman season and required surgery before returning last year.
T25-WASHINGTON-FACING ADVERSITY
It’s been easy for No. 9 Washington heading into Pac-12 play
SEATTLE (AP) — This much is certain about No. 9 Washington: It can beat up on lesser competition.
In cruising to an impressive 3-0 start, the Huskies have done most things very well. Quarterback Jake Browning is leading the country in pass efficiency, the Huskies have scored 40 or more points in six straight games and plenty of younger players have gotten valuable experience in a less-than-challenging nonconference scheduled that featured Rutgers, Idaho and Portland State.
Coach Chris Peterson says the Huskies will see if they’re ready to face adversity or a competitive game as they open Pac-12 play this week at Arizona.
The Wildcats (2-1) will present Washington’s first true examination in a place where Petersen suffered one of his most painful defeats. Two years ago the Huskies were unable to run out the clock in the closing minutes and a fumble led to Arizona kicking a field goal on the final play for a 27-26 win. Washington’s last win at Arizona came in 2006.
MLS-JEWSBURY-RETIREMENT
Timbers’ Jack Jewsbury to retire at season’s end
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland Timbers midfielder Jack Jewsbury will retire at the end of this season after 14 seasons in Major League Soccer.
Jewsbury made the announcement at the Timbers’ annual Stand Together Banquet on Sunday night. His announcement was greeted by chants of “One More Year!” from the crowd.
The 35-year-old has played for the Timbers for the past six seasons, including last season when Portland won the MLS Cup championship.
“I will always treasure my six years playing for Portland, including the postgame victory laps on the field with my daughters and celebrating the Timbers MLS Cup victory with the entire city.”
Jewsbury is one of just 38 players to have played in 300 MLS matches. He ranks 10th all-time with 348 career games. He’s played in 19 postseason games.
He has had 28 goals — including 10 game-winners — and 37 assists over his career.
