DETROIT (AP) — Ben Gamel had an RBI single in the ninth inning to help the Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on Thursday. Kyle Seager doubled off Francisco Rodriguez (1-2) with one out, and Gamel followed with his hit to right-center field. Tony Zych (1-0) was the winner, and Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his third save. The Mariners closed the series with two one-run victories after falling 19-9 in the opener.

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington and Ohio State have announced a two-game home-and-home series beginning in the 2024 season. The two schools will meet at Husky Stadium in Seattle on Sept. 14, 2024, and have a date at Ohio Stadium in Columbus on Sept. 13, 2025. The schools announced the scheduling agreement on Thursday. Washington and Ohio State are coming off seasons in which they reached the College Football Playoff, with both falling in the national semifinals.

SEATTLE (AP) — Michael Mantenuto, a former actor best known for his role in the Disney hockey movie “Miracle” and who later joined the Army, has died in the Seattle suburb of Des Moines. He was 35. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office in Seattle said Mantenuto died of a gunshot wound to the head Monday. It ruled his death a suicide.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — The Vancouver Canucks have hired Travis Green as their new coach. Green spent the last four seasons coaching the Canucks’ top farm team, the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League. He replaces the fired Willie Desjardins, who spent three seasons in Vancouver.
