“This freshman class we have a pretty big class about 14 or 15 have signed up.  There are some talented kids and they’re working hard and our upper classmen are working hard as well.  and so I think it’s a good mixture.

Smith says there are not a lot of seniors on the team this year making coaching a little tougher, but he says you play the hand you have and make the best out of it.  The Viks take the field at home tomorrow against Elmira.  Pregame on kcst is at 6:45.

The Eugene Emeralds struck first last night against the salem Kaiser volcanoes.  The jumped to a 4 nothing lead in the bottom of the third with a couple of doubles and a triple early on.  The volcanoes answered with a  homer and run off a single in the fourth. The Ems scored 2 more runs in the top of the 7th but then a couple of pitching errors led to 3 runs for the Volcanoes closing the gap to 6-5.  The Ems were able to hold on though for the win bringing them within one game of making the playoffs.  Play resumes tonight in Salem at 7:05.
