Workouts Cancelled
There has been a reversal in plans for Siuslaw Viking Voluntary workouts. There were to be fall sport workouts beginning on Monday, but new COVID-19 numbers released have changed the minds of the Siuslaw School District. For the time being the workouts will be delayed until coronavirus rates improve. Stringent rules in place by the state have made workouts difficult to conduct safely.
Pac-12 Wants to Play
The Pac-12 is the last remaining standout, of the 5 leading conferences, to the fall football schedule. Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott and others have been lobbying to follow the Big Ten conferences decision to move forward with football, but Scott says rules in place by the state of California and the State of Oregon make it impossible to move forward. There has been an exemption granted for universities in Oregon to begin practice again, there are hopes of a rapid covid test being instrumented in the state for athletics as it was for the Big Ten teams, for now a spokesperson for Governor Kate Brown says they are waiting for more details on the test before moving forward. California Governor Gavin Newsome also cleared some hurdles for teams in his state to begin practicing. In Oregon the Ducks and Beavers each could lose 50 to 80 million dollars if the games are not allowed to move forward. There is a lot of speculation that games in the Pac-12 could resume by the beginning of November, but that is not by any means a firm or confirmed timeline.
