Viking Victory
The Vikings committed three turnovers in the first half and only led 14-0 going into the break. But they came back with 22 unanswered points in the second period to defeat the Newport Cubs 36-0 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Morrow Field in Newport. Max Reynolds carried the ball 13 times for 99 yards and one touchdown. Mika Blankenship found the end zone three times. The defense ruled the night holding the Cubs to just 19 yards rushing in total on 26 plays. Three of those plays were for no gain, another eight were for losses. Siuslaw will be in Mt Angel Friday where they will face the 2022 State 3A runners up, the Kennedy Trojans.
Ducks Rout Portland State
Bo Nix threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns before heading for the bench early in the third quarter and No. 15 Oregon built a 43-point halftime lead en route to an 81-7 victory over Portland State on Saturday. It was the most points for the Ducks in a game in the modern scoring era, and a scoring record at Autzen Stadium. It was also Oregon’s 19th straight win in a home opener. The Ducks have won 30 straight non-conference games at Autzen Stadium, dating to 2008.
Beavers Dominate San Jose State
The Oregon State Beavers also had a successful opening day traveling to San Jose State the Beaver marched down the field on their opening drive to start the scoring. The Beavers qb DJ Ulagalelei accounted for 5 of the six touchdowns in the 42-17 victory. The Beavers compiled 473 yards of offense. Running back Damian Martinez has 18 carries for 145 yards.
Ems Split Series with Tri-City
The Ems had a 5 run fourth inning, but it was a solo home run by the tri-city dust devils in the top of the ninth that made the difference in the game. Tri City broke a 7-7 tie with a solo shot to left field by Will McGillis. The teams split the series 3-3. The Ems will be on the field this evening in Washington against the Everett Aqua Sox.
