Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
HOOD RIVER, Ore. (AP) – Officials say a blaze fueled by lichens
and mosses burning in forest treetops on the north side of Mount
Hood has grown considerably and moved to the north. Fire spokesman
Mike Heilman says the fire was expected to grow as warmer, drier
weather and decreased humidity was expected yesterday. Smoke and
ash from the blaze were forecast to drift toward communities in the
west. The Dollar Lake fire was estimated at 5,843 acres and was 35
percent contained yesterday afternoon.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon couple who belong to a
faith-healing church will go on trial this week in Clackamas
County, accused of rejecting medical care that could have saved
their newborn child. Dale and Shannon Hickman are charged with
second-degree manslaughter. The Oregonian says the Hickmans are
members of the Followers of Christ, an Oregon City faith-healing
church that has a history of children dying from curable conditions
because parents rejected medical care. The baby was born two months
premature and lived for just nine hours.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 31-year-old man tumbled to his death
yesterday after he fell from an overpass onto Interstate 5 in
Portland. Police and medical personnel found the man down on the
freeway’s northbound lanes. Authorities say it appears he fell over
the railing of the North Williams Avenue overpass onto I-5.
Witnesses say he may have been reaching for something prior to
falling. His name won’t be released until his family has been
notified.
ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a 71-year-old
Tillamook man is dead after driving on Interstate 5 in the wrong
direction and colliding head-on with another vehicle. Lt. Mark
Cotter says Monty Upshaw was driving northbound in the southbound
lanes of I-5 south of Albany around 9 p.m. Saturday. Cotter says
that a preliminary probe found Upshaw sideswiped an SUV and
collided with a pickup truck. Alcohol is a suspected contributing
factor.
