Five times over the past 8-weeks Florence Police have set up a video camera, positioned officers in pursuit cars and put their decoy in place. The objective: increase pedestrian safety in highway crosswalks in Florence. The actions were funded in part by a grant from the Bicycle Transportation Alliance.
The final operation was this past Monday, September 12th and it resulted in 23 crosswalk violation citations bringing to 75 the total number handed out to motorists for failing to yield to a pedestrian. An additional 25 citations were handed out for other offenses, along with 33 warnings and even one felony warrant arrest.
Police Chief Maury Sanders said the number of citations make it clear to him that authorities need to continue their efforts to make streets safer for pedestrians.
