GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – An 11-year-old boy waiting for the
school bus in the Southern Oregon community of Merlin was shot in
the leg, and state police are investigating whether a man shooting
at a deer in his front yard was responsible. Troopers say the boy
was able to walk home yesterday and contact his mother. He was
taken by ambulance to a hospital in Grants Pass. Authorities say a
45-year-old man who lives across the road told sheriff’s deputies
that he shot four times at a deer in his front yard, and one of the
rounds may have hit the boy.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Police have arrested a relative of the
couple shot dead at their home in the Southern Oregon community of
Merlin. Josephine County sheriff’s deputies say 58-year-old Gary
Lyle Goins was arrested on aggravated murder charges Tuesday at a
convenience store near his home in Placerville, Calif. He was held
at the Placer County Jail. Deputies say he is the brother of Dennis
Goins, who was found shot dead at his home on Monday along with his
wife, Susan Goins. Deputies released no details on a possible
motive in the case.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Transportation Security Administration
says no changes will be made to security procedures at Los Angeles
International Airport after a loaded handgun fell out of checked
baggage being loaded on a plane. TSA spokesman Nico Melendez says
that the weapons are legal to carry in checked bags if they are
unloaded, declared and in a proper case. Authorities said Alaska
Airlines hadn’t been notified about the .38-caliber handgun that
tumbled out of a duffel bag being loaded onto a Portland-bound
flight on Sunday in Los Angeles.
ST. PAUL, Ore. (AP) – Investigators looking into a mid-air crash
that killed a former state trooper say one of the two planes was
flown by a flight instructor and student. Authorities said they
aren’t sure whether the teacher or the pupil was controlling the
aircraft when it collided Tuesday afternoon with a plane flown by
58-year-old Stephen Watson, a retired state trooper. Watson was
killed when his single-engine plane broke apart and slammed into
the ground near Wilsonville. Investigators believe Watson was alone
in the plane. The teacher and pupil weren’t hurt.
