PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A group affiliated with the Occupy Wall
Street movement marched through downtown Portland yesterday,
protesting the student loan system and the debt students incur. The
hour-long march that began at Portland State University ended with
a scuffle between people who spilled onto city streets and officers
on bicycles who tried to keep protesters on the sidewalk. The
marches have been happening daily since the Occupy Portland
encampment was removed on Sunday, in solidarity with other cities
and for a litany of causes.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An orthopedic surgeon from Bend says he’s
running for secretary of state, and Republicans hope he’ll help
them crack a Democratic monopoly on statewide offices. Dr. Knute
Buehler (NEWT’ BYU’-ler) launched his bid yesterday after exploring
a run and raising money for weeks. Buehler says he’s amassed nearly
$200,000 for his campaign to unseat Democrat Kate Brown, who is
seeking a second term in office.

ST. HELENS, Ore. (AP) – Authorities are looking for a
19-year-old Columbia County woman who’s been missing since Sunday.
Sheriff Jeff Dickerson says there is no indication from family
members that Nichole Sherman had problems, and he calls it “a
highly suspicious disappearance.” The sheriff’s office said
yesterday that Sherman left her home Sunday to go to a friend’s
house about two miles away northwest of St. Helens – but never
arrived.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – A 21-year-old Rock Creek man has pleaded
guilty to raping three Washington County girls last year. The
Oregonian reports that under the plea agreement, Jeffrey Paul
Erickson will spend 20 years in prison without possibility of early
release. A 15-year-old girl accused Erickson of drugging and raping
her last year. Police said that after her initial report,
additional victims came forward. Sentencing is set for next week.
