ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – The Coast Guard has closed several river
bars in Oregon and Washington to all vessels because of hazardous
weather. Coast Guard officials in Seattle and Astoria say they’re
closing the bars at Quillayute (KWIL-uh-yoot) River and Grays
Harbor in Washington as well as the Columbia River. The Coast Guard
says it will re-open the waterways as soon as offshore weather
improves.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Critics are heaping scorn on members of the
State Board of Higher Education after they told University of
Oregon President Richard Lariviere that he will not be returning
next year. UO’s biggest donor, Nike Chairman Phil Knight, called it
an “astonishingly bad decision.” The Register-Guard reports that
so many calls were made to the Oregon University System offices
that the phone numbers for individual board members were removed
from the website.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – The Deschutes County Commission now says the
Pledge of Allegiance at the start of every meeting. At the urging
of Commissioner Tony DeBone, the county board began reciting the
Pledge in August, two years after another commissioner says he
couldn’t build a consensus to do it. The decision follows a
high-profile disagreement over the Pledge that divided the Eugene
City Council.
COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – Coos County is the surprise beneficiary
after the federal government closed a small campsite in a
neighboring county. The county parks department will scoop up more
than $40,000 worth of facilities from the Bear Creek campground.
The BLM is closing the small, sparsely used camp in Douglas County
because of the agency’s diminishing budget.
