PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A 24-year-old Iraq War veteran is
reportedly in a coma following an assault at a Pendleton railroad
crossing that so traumatized a witness he has trouble recalling it.
A Kadlec Regional Medical Center spokesman in Richland, Wash., said
yesterday that Kenneth Pittman was in serious condition in
intensive care. The East Oregonian says police are looking for the
assailant but have little to go on.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Deschutes County District Attorney Patrick
Flaherty says Oregon State Police are investigating his office.
Flaherty said the attorney general’s office recently asked for an
investigation into a complaint of possible criminal wrongdoing. The
investigation involves the county office’s handling of a grand jury
investigation earlier this year and the recent layoff of an
investigator.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The city of Eugene is joining a growing
number of cities in Oregon considering restricting plastic bags.
After the Legislature failed to act on a ban this year, the city of
Portland barred plastic bags at checkout stands in supermarkets and
big retailers. The Register-Guard reports that the Eugene City
Council is getting ready to study a bag ban. Corvallis, Newport and
Ashland are also mulling plastic-bag bans.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A recent appointee to the federal court
bench in Portland has been assigned one of the Northwest’s longest
and most contentious issues – the Columbia River Basin salmon case.
District Judge Michael Simon was confirmed last June by the U.S.
Senate. Judge James Redden shepherded the case for years but the
82-year-old jurist said last week he had asked that the case be
reassigned.
