Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland teen admits he was wrong to
steal a shirt, but he’s fighting the consequences – deportation to
Mexico. Gustavo Romero-Alvarez tells KATU he has no memory of
Mexico. He was brought to the United States illegally when he was 7
years old and is a senior at Centennial High School. Authorities
discovered his undocumented immigration status after his arrest
last year for the department store theft. Alvarez spent two months
in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention. He is scheduled
to be deported this week.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Some emergency room patients from St. Charles
hospitals in Bend and Redmond have been notified their personal
data may have been compromised by the theft of a laptop computer
from a community health worker. The Bulletin reports the hospital
says there’s no indication that the password-protected information
has been accessed, but the patients are being offered membership in
an identity-monitoring service.
TURNER, Ore. (AP) – A man was driving his stepdaughter home
after a Tuesday night basketball game when their car crashed into a
bridge railing and both were killed near Turner, just south of
Salem. The Statesman Journal reports 14-year-old Calli Federico was
a freshman at Cascade High School. No other cars were involved, and
Marion County deputies are trying to determine what caused the
crash that also killed Tyler Van Cleave.
BANKS, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters from Banks and Forest Grove
rescued a deer stuck in a hole in the middle of a frozen pond.
Firefighter Geoff McFarland tells KGW an attempt to cross the ice
with a rescue board Wednesday frightened the deer. So, firefighters
launched a rescue boat and used it as an icebreaker to clear a
channel for the deer to swim to shore. The deer rested on the bank
for a few minutes then disappeared in the timber.
