Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Lawyers for an Oregon man who authorities
believe may have been planning a sniper attack on a high school
football game argued for his release while he awaits trial on
firearms possession charges. U.S. District Court Judge Owen Panner
in Medford said yesterday he will rule soon on whether to grant
bail to 26-year-old Raphael Amoroso. Amoroso was arrested in
October with a loaded pistol, marijuana and a novel about a sniper
attack on a football game after driving out of a parking lot at
Grants Pass High School.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The city of Medford says it is close to a
compromise with a group of irate residents who say a new police
communications tower could damage home prices in the area. The
Medford Mail Tribune reports the residents want the tower shortened
by 30 feet or moved. The city erected the tower in December 2010,
but it never became operational because of an appeal to the Land
Use Board of Appeals.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A private practice attorney is running for
state attorney general, saying she deserves the job because of her
history resolving fraud-related claims. Katherine Heekin, a
University of Oregon law school graduate and founder of her own
Portland law firm, says her work on behalf of fraud victims
qualifies her for the position. Heekin is running as a Democrat,
according to paperwork filed with the Oregon Secretary of State’s
Office.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Fears of underweight Dungeness crabs found
in a November survey south of Gold Beach delayed the start of
crabbing season by a month and a half. On Thursday, the Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Marine Resources program
announced the wait is over – crabbing season will begin on Sunday
along the entire coast. Fishery managers made the decision in
December to delay the season from about Gold Beach south to the
California border.
