Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
TURNER, Ore. (AP) – Raging waters from a flooded Oregon creek
swept a carload of four people out of a grocery store parking lot
and into the mouth of a canal culvert. Only two surfaced, a father
and son. The bodies of the other two people in the car, a mother
and her 1-year-old son, were recovered later. They were identified
as 18-year-old Catherine McLaughlin and her son Aiden.
SCIO, Ore. (AP) – Officials in the city of Turner have asked
residents to evacuate their homes and flee to higher ground as
floodwaters from the rising Mill Creek sweep through town. The city
has also told gas company Northwest Natural to turn off gas to the
entire city. Earlier yesterday, 50 families were taken from their
homes because of flood concerns.
ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Ashland City Council has agreed to set
up a reward fund in the killing of 23-year-old David Grubbs. He was
nearly decapitated as he walked home from work on a bike path in
November. Police say they have no suspects. The Daily Tidings
reported yesterday the council has agreed to a fund financed by
public donations and administered by the city. A $1,500
Crimestoppers reward had been set up. Some residents said they were
concerned that if police solved the crime without a tip, the money
would go back into Crimestoppers, but officials say people will
either get a refund or the money will go to police.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Conservation groups have warned the state
of Oregon they will sue to reduce logging on state forests to
protect nesting trees for a threatened seabird called the marbled
murrelet. Cascadia Wildlands, the Center for Biological Diversity,
and the Audubon Society of Portland sent the governor and state
agencies formal notices yesterday that a lawsuit will be filed if
they do not rescind recent decisions to increase clearcut logging
on the Elliott, Tillamook and Clatsop state forests.
