Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – About 40 demonstrators joined an Occupy
Eugene march on downtown banks yesterday, shadowed by police along
most of their route. Two marchers carried a sign that read “Smash
Capitalism.” Police tell The Register-Guard there were no arrests.
At least two banks locked their doors as protesters approached. In
front of both of those banks, protesters used colored chalk to
scrawl sidewalk messages assailing corporate greed.
ESTACADA, Ore. (AP) – Clackamas County deputies say rescuers
will try again today to find a 6-year-old girl who fell into the
frigid, rain-swollen Clackamas River and was swept downstream.
Vinesa Snegur’s father raced along the river but couldn’t keep up
after his daughter fell in Sunday afternoon. The waterway is
running fast and cold from a recent winter storm. About 50 ground
searchers and divers suspended their search last night.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Agriculture officials say a new fungal
plant disease has been detected in Oregon for the first time.
Unlike the pathogen that causes sudden oak death, the state
Agriculture Department says boxwood blight is no threat to the
state’s environment. It affects only boxwoods, a plant species that
is not native to Oregon. The disease was found in December at a
Washington County nursery. The state is working with the nursery to
destroy the infected plants.
PRINEVILLE, Ore. (AP) – A 3-year-old Irish wolfhound from
Prineville in central Oregon has gotten an invitation to the
Westminster Kennel Club’s 136th annual dog competition in New York.
KTVZ reports that “Paddy” has accumulated enough show points to
rank fifth in the nation in his breed competition. Paddy will
compete on Feb. 13 at Madison Square Garden.
