PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon judge has imposed a 45-day jail
sentence and mental health evaluation for a 33-year-old man who
attacked customers at a Portland Toys R Us store with light sabers
last December. David Canterbury the judge that he’s already seeking
mental health treatment. The Oregonian reports that Canterbury
pleaded no contest yesterday to assault and resisting arrest.
Police say Canterbury had a Star Wars light saber in each hand as
he swung at three customers inside at police outside.
WARM SPRINGS, Ore. (AP) – Tribal officials are making a push to
spread high-speed Internet service across the Warm Spring Indian
Reservation in Central Oregon. The Bend Bulletin reports that Warm
Springs Telecommunications Co. expects to start providing
high-speed Internet to area residents in late February and
telephone services by the end of March. The company is the ninth
tribally owned telecom in U.S.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Federal authorities in the Northwest are
working on plans to prevent, or at least slow, a fungus responsible
for the deaths of millions of bats in eastern states. The fungus
frosts the bats’ muzzles – so it’s called white nose syndrome. The
bats awaken in mid-hibernation. Weak, they die when they leave
their caves seeking insects in winter.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A special election wraps up tonight in
northwest Oregon, more than a year after the first public sign of
trouble for former Congressman David Wu. Ballots are due by 8 p.m.,
in county-run drop boxes. And election officials say they’ll
release the first results at that time. Wu resigned from Congress
in August after a newspaper reported that the 18-year-old daughter
of a campaign donor accused the seven-term Democrat of making an
unwanted sexual advance at a Thanksgiving dinner.
