Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Deschutes County deputies and Forest Service
rangers helped rescue a snowmobiler who hit a tree at Moon
Mountain. KTVZ reports they lowered the 46-year-old Sherwood man to
the base of Moon Mountain last evening so he could be airlifted to
St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. He’s expected to survive.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – It took a police dog and a Taser to stop a man
suspected of stabbing two people at a bar in Bend. Police say when
the man refused to stop, they deployed a police dog. The suspect
fought with the dog and its handler for several minutes until
officers used the Taser to subdue the 22-year-old man. He was
treated at a hospital and jailed on assault charges. A man and
woman stabbed in the brawl were treated at a hospital.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man has died in a chemical holding tank
on a barge at Portland. Fire officials say the 57-year-old man
apparently opened a hatch yesterday, passed out from the fumes and
fell into a corrosive chemical. The chemical in the tank was
12-feet deep. The chemical was pumped into another tank, and
firefighters in hazmat suits recovered the body.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate is expected to vote this
week on a proposal to give a reprieve to more than 1,600 people
dropped from a property tax deferral program intended to help
seniors and people with disabilities stay in their homes. The
decades-old program had faced a shortfall, and the Legislature last
year voted to tighten the eligibility requirements. As a result,
the number of participants was cut in half – and thousands of
people were required to pay property taxes they hadn’t anticipated.
