Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Salem man has been arrested in the case of
eight malnourished horses removed last week from a muddy field
where several other horses were found dead. Marion County sheriff’s
deputies who arrested Jared Harrison yesterday say he was the
caretaker for the horses removed from the property, and that he
said the horses’ owner didn’t give him sufficient money for care
and feeding. The SPCA says the horses are responding to treatment
for lice, parasites, rain rot, mud fever and general starvation.
PRINEVILLE, Ore. (AP) – Apple Inc. confirms it has bought 160
acres in central Oregon and plans a data center there. Apple
spokeswoman Kristin Huguet confirmed the deal Tuesday to KTVZ-TV
but declined to discuss any details. The station reports that the
Prineville parcel purchased from Crook County for $5.6 million is
close to a huge data center built by Facebook.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s appearance
at yesterday’s town hall meeting in Medford drew about a dozen
protesters who oppose any plan to remove Klamath River dams. KDRV
reports that the dams were brought up several times during the town
hall but Salazar kept the topic on forest plans. An Interior
Department report says removing four hydroelectric dams in the
Klamath Basin would help restore salmon and sustain irrigation for
farmers.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Zoo officials say their 24-year-old
eastern black rhino “Pete” has been euthanized due to advanced
kidney failure. Zoo curator Michael Illig was Pete’s original
keeper when the rhino arrived at the Portland zoo as a 500-pound
juvenile more than 20 years ago. Illig recalls sleeping in the
rhino barn and hand-feeding Pete for a few days until he settled
into his new home. A 3-year-old female rhino arrived at the zoo
last April. Zoo officials say they will look for another male to be
paired with her.
