CANYON CITY, Ore. (AP) – Authorities believe that a drug debt
was at the heart of a 20-year-old case that has led to the arrests
of two men in the past week. They are accused in the killing of
Danny Sweet, who disappeared in 1992 at the age of 36. His remains
were found in January 1996 in Grant County in Central Oregon. The
murder indictments and a prosecutor describe a killing for hire
over drugs. The indictments allege that George Bogan paid or agreed
to pay Thomas Colbert to carry out the killing.
DALLAS, Ore. (AP) – A Polk County man has been sentenced to
nearly 67 years in prison for possession and distribution of child
pornography. The district attorney’s office tells the Statesman
Journal 36-year-old David Klinepier was sentenced yesterday. He
pleaded guilty in November to 20 counts of first-degree
encouragement of child abuse. Authorities say Klinepier used his
computer to download and share child pornography. Newberg police
say they found more than one million images and videos.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Corrections officials say two
inmates have been diagnosed with chickenpox at a prison in
northeast Portland. Both prison and health officials are working to
prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease. State
Corrections Department spokeswoman Jennifer Black said yesterday
that neither of the unidentified inmates has needed treatment
outside the 595-bed Columbia River Correctional Institution.
Chickenpox causes a blister-like rash, itching, tiredness and
fever.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Postal Service plans to close
four mail-sorting centers in Oregon due to a 25 percent decline in
people using first-class mail. The agency announced yesterday that
it will close processing and distribution facilities in Salem,
Eugene, Bend and Pendleton and move operations to the facility near
the airport in Portland, starting as soon as mid-May. Spokesman
Peter Hass says the closures will eliminate 164 jobs locally for a
projected savings of nearly $13 million.
