THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) – An 18-year-old man faces first-degree
manslaughter charges in connection with the fatal shooting of his
younger brother. The Wasco County district attorney says Daniel
Hammond did not intentionally kill his 15-year-old brother, but he
did act recklessly. Michael Hammond was found dead in an upstairs
bedroom in their family home in The Dalles early Sunday. He was a
student at The Dalles-Whatonka High School. KGW-TV says Daniel
Hammond appeared in court yesterday.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Salem high school coach has been placed on
paid administrative leave after he was charged in connection with a
drunken driving hit-and-run crash that injured two people.
Salem-Keizer Public Schools spokesman Jay Remy says Willie Freeman
was charged Friday with felony hit-and-run, reckless driving and
other charges. He says the district put the North Salem boys’
basketball coach on paid leave, a normal procedure when staff
members are charged with a crime.
EUREKA, Calif. (AP) – Two contract biologists and the former
director of forestry for the Yurok tribe are accused of embezzling
some $900,000 in money intended for spotted owl research over the
past three years. Court documents allege the men conspired to
charge the tribe for phony spotted owl surveys on tribal forests,
and that the former tribal forestry director improperly used a
tribal credit card to buy iPads, car repairs, gasoline, and
cleaning supplies.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Legislation intended to help homeowners
facing foreclosure appears to be dead, with both Republicans and
Democrats saying negotiations have broken down. Lawmakers from both
parties say they disagreed about the role that financial counselors
should play in the foreclosure process and whether borrowers should
be able to force their lender into mediation.
