Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A bill aimed at reducing cyberbullying among
schoolchildren has cleared the Oregon House and is now headed to
Gov. John Kitzhaber. The House voted unanimously yesterday to
require school employees to report student harassment, including
intimidation and cyberbullying.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon House has voted to make it illegal
to post a job advertisement telling unemployed jobseekers not to
apply. The House’s approval yesterday sends the measure to Gov.
John Kitzhaber. Even if the measure becomes law, employers could
still exclude unemployed applicants as they’re flipping through
resumes. They would only violate the law if they say in the job ad
that applicants must be currently employed. Violators would face a
$1,000 fine.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An 85-year-old Scappoose rancher has been
found guilty of 27 counts of water pollution, including two
felonies. The Oregon Attorney General’s office says William Holdner
illegally discharged cattle waste into two Columbia County creeks,
and also ran a cattle operation without proper permits. His
sentencing is scheduled for March 6.
HONOLULU (AP) – Tsunamis generated by the magnitude-9 earthquake
in Japan last March dragged 3 million to 4 million tons of debris
into the ocean after tearing up Japanese harbors and homes.
Scientists believe ocean currents are carrying some of the lumber,
refrigerators, fishing boats and other objects across the Pacific
toward the U.S. One to 5 percent of the 1 million to 2 million tons
of debris still in the ocean may reach Hawaii, Oregon and other
western states and British Columbia.
