SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Marion County sheriff’s officers say they’ve
arrested a Chemeketa (sha-MEK’-ah-tuh) Community College student in
connection with two of the recent threats against the Salem, Ore.,
school. A sheriff’s spokesman says 27-year-old Danielle Sylvia of
Salem told detectives she faced nursing tests on Feb. 13 and 27. He
says Sylvia acknowledged making the hoax calls. One said there
would be a shooting, the other was a bomb threat. Sylvia denied any
involvement with a March 1 threat.
LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. (AP) – Three Lake Oswego High School students
have been suspended in an investigation of racist tweets aimed at a
black student and member of the state championship football team
who had recently transferred. The Oregonian says the school’s
principal confirmed the suspensions, also reported yesterday by
Willamette Week. The former player transferred to Lakeridge High
School and the tweets occurred after that. Marqueese Royster and
his mother filed a police report last month.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Two people are dead in Eugene after a
speeding car with a teen driver ran a red light and slammed into a
pickup. Oregon State Police say a trooper had just pulled over a
car he clocked at more than 100 mph yesterday when the driver raced
off again, running the light and colliding with the pickup. Police
say a man and woman in the pickup were ejected and later died of
their injuries. Officers arrested the car’s 16-year-old driver for
investigation of manslaughter and third-degree assault.
SCAPPOOSE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a Vancouver man
was standing or walking on Highway 30 near Scappoose late Tuesday
night when he was struck from behind by an SUV and killed. He’s
identified as 25-year-old James C. Whitehorse. Police say is
alcohol use is a possible factor in the accident. Whitehorse was in
an unlit area when he was hit. The 18-year-old driver remained at
the scene and cooperated with investigators. The highway reopened
about 3 a.m. yesterday.
