SHERIDAN, Ore. (AP) – Yamhill County sheriff’s officers say they’ve arrested a Sheridan man for investigation of murder in the death of a 77-year-old property owner. The sheriff says 40-year-old Xavier Wolfgang is scheduled for arraignment today. Deputies found the body of Walter Adelman after his daughter reported she hadn’t heard from him in a few days.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A resolution presented to the state Board of Education would require Oregon high schools to retire their Native American mascots within five years or risk losing state funding. If approved as early as next month, eight high schools would need to change their nickname and mascot by 2017 or lose state money. Seven schools identified as the Warriors would only have to alter their mascot.
RIO HATO, Panama (AP) – A Panamanian fisherman who saw his two friends die from exposure in an open boat after more than 16 days at sea says a big ship passed but kept going despite their signaling for help. Two Oregon residents aboard a cruise ship in the same area believe they saw the fishermen adrift at sea and they alerted the crew. But the luxury liner continued on its course. Adrian Vasquez was the only one to survive, after 28 days adrift.
ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – Bones found on a Southern Oregon ranch are being tested to determine whether they are those of a Roseburg man missing since 2009. The Roseburg News-Review reports that a rancher found clothing and ID Monday belonging to Clayton Pankey, last seen at a gasoline station in Sutherlin.
