PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A school district east of Portland has canceled classes for today as a strike deadline looms and contract talks continue with teachers. The teachers union, the Gresham-Barlow Education Association, offered a contract proposal to the district Monday night. The district made a counterproposal at mid-day yesterday, then announced there would be no classes today. The teachers union has said it would strike on Wednesday if no agreement is reached.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Residents of east Portland say the maddeningly loud noise of a stuck horn on a Union Pacific freight train engine lasted for more than an hour before an engineer finally shut it off. How loud was the Monday night annoyance? KGW-TV reports it could be heard a mile away. Nearby resident Jacob Rose says, “It felt like somebody had parked a car inside of my brain” with the horn blasting. KGW reports the noise didn’t stop until about 11 p.m. It was blamed on a mechanical malfunction.
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in Lane County say a search crew found a couple and their 4-year-old granddaughter huddled on a root wad on the McKenzie River where they had taken refuge after their boat capsized. They were stranded for nine hours. The Eugene Register-Guard says the three were treated for mild hypothermia after they were rescued Monday night.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The city of Eugene wants to crack down on wild parties by going after the hosts. A potential ordinance debated by the City Council this week would give authorities power to fine people who throw parties that veer out of control. To break the law, a person would have to host an alcohol-fueled party where police witness at least two infractions – like public urination or excessive noise. City officials say the ordinance is unlikely to be approved before fall since revisions are needed.
