PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The website for the Gresham-Barlow Education Association says teachers are now on strike. The district east of Portland had already canceled today’s classes because of the strike threat. Issues include salary, preparation time and what the union describes as teacher safety concerns.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Vandals broke century-old stained glass windows at a Portland church that has drawn protests for its views against homosexuality. KATU reports someone sent an email to local media claiming responsibility for the vandalism at Mars Hill Church in the name of gay rights.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – The body found in the Deschutes River on Sunday near downtown Bend has been identified by police as 25-year-old Jesse David Zimmerman of Portland. Police say he had rented a home for the weekend with friends and the death does not appear to be a criminal matter.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – State fish and wildlife troopers arrested a Klamath Falls man accused of illegally hunting bears with bait. The department says 30-year-old Trevor Lawrence Harris is believed to have used dead crows, salmon, steelhead and trout to lure bears into the area.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Washington County deputies have arrested a 36-year-old man accused of cutting his home’s natural gas line in an attempt to harm his wife and four children. James Speidel of the small Portland-area town of Bethany was jailed last night on $1 million bail.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Lane County sheriff’s officers say human remains have been found on land bordering a landfill south of Eugene. Officials tell The Register-Guard it appears the body has been there since before last fall. Investigators say the remains are likely those of one of three missing local adults. Dental records are being checked.
