Prep baseball… the Siuslaw Vikings spotted the Douglas Trojans four runs in the first inning, then battled back to tie it at five-all in the sixth. Still tied after the regulation seven, Douglas forced a run across in the bottom of the ninth for the 6-5 win… only their second in league play so far this year. In other Far West action yesterday, South Umpqua demolished Sutherlin 17-6 in six innings to keep a firm grip on first place. North Bend did a little demolition of their own in a 13-6 win over Brookings-Harbor.
On the softball diamond, Sadie Wells drove in Siuslaw’s only run of the day with a stand up double, but the Vikings committed two errors that cost them three runs as they fell to the Douglas Trojans 5-1 in Winston. The Trojans are ten-and-oh in Far West play at the top of the standings. No results were posted for Sutherlin and South Umpqua, but Brookings-Harbor downed North Bend 11-1.
Number 10 Oregon extended its winning streak on the college diamond with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Gonzaga last night in Spokane. The Ducks trailed 2-nothing after five innings, but evened it in the top of the sixth with a two-run shot off the bat of Kyle Garlick. The winning run for Oregon scored in the seventh on a suicide squeeze by Aaron Payne to score Kevin Shepherd. The two teams meet again today for non-league play.
