PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Two Oregon tribes say they’re disappointed with the State Board of Education’s decision last week to ban Native American mascots in schools. The Oregonian reports The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the Confederated Tribes of Grande Ronde had asked the board to allow local tribes to work with schools on their portrayal of Native culture.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State cornerback Jordan Poyer is charged with second-degree trespassing after his arrest at a nightclub near campus last weekend. Police say Poyer was barred from the Impulse Bar & Grill earlier this year, but managed to get into the club by using an alternate entrance early Saturday. Poyer posted on Twitter yesterday that the incident was a “big misunderstanding” and got blown out of proportion.
SISTERS, Ore. (AP) – When a five-pound dog named Pup Pup vanished in January 2008 into the high desert around Sisters, Ore., while his family was away, his owner searched for him for months to no avail. Lynn Owen finally accepted the possibility that her Brussels griffon was gone for good. Fast forward to the present day, when Pup Pup ended up in a back yard in Estacada more than 100 miles from Owen’s home. The finder took the dog to a vet to check for a microchip and that led her to Owen. Pup Pup returned home last Friday.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon highway officials think they’ve come up with a plan to balance their need to repave two miles of highway near the Oregon Zoo with the zoo’s need to keep a pregnant elephant calm. The Oregonian reports Rose-Tu is due to give birth to her second calf in December. Highway officials say they’ve worked out a plan to acclimate Rose-Tu to the noise by beginning work in the eastbound lanes, farthest from the zoo and do no work from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28 in a nearly mile-long buffer zone near the zoo.
