MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to see if an Eagle Point man’s death was related to a police officer shocking him with a stun gun after the man struggled with paramedics trying to take him to a hospital. The Mail Tribune reports that 44-year-old Scott Chappell stopped breathing in the ambulance Tuesday evening. He was pronounced dead at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. Chappell was due to go to trial July 17 on methamphetamine possession and other charges.
GOLD BEACH, Ore. (AP) – A 19-year-old Coos Bay man arrested in March for having sex with a 15-year-old girl has pleaded guilty to third-degree rape. Jonathan Roman-Castro will avoid jail time as part of an agreement, but must undergo socio-sexual evaluations. The World newspaper reported that Roman-Castro and the girl had sex at a large house party in Langlois, and most of the people at the gathering had been drinking. Roman-Castro was arrested three days later following a report of a rape.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office says a man sustained critical injuries when his drag racing boat crashed on the Columbia River. A sheriff’s spokesman says the man was practicing yesterday afternoon for an upcoming race when his boat malfunctioned and flipped several times. The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to the Legacy Emanuel Trauma Center. The sheriff’s office is investigating the crash and no one else was hurt.
NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – The bids are in for removing a dock that floated from Japan to an Oregon beach after being set adrift by last year’s tsunami. The Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation said Thursday the lowest bids are for breaking down the dock and hauling it off. They range from $79,922 to $84,496.50, with one for $240,000. Towing the dock off the beach into the boat basin at Newport would cost between $128,702 and $175,271.20. The state will have to pay the bill to remove it.
