PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police have arrested the parents of a 5-year-old boy who died last week after being brought to a hospital. His parents said he was injured in a fall. However the Oregon State medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, saying the boy died of battered child syndrome. Police said last night that Kalman Eteuati and Valisha Eteuati are jailed for investigation of murder.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Fire officials say a fast-moving fire charred a downtown Eugene building that was home to a clothing store and several upper floor apartments. Firefighters tell the Register-Guard that no one was injured in yesterday’s fire but tenants say they fled a “wall of flames.” Fire officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage was estimated at $350,000.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Investigators say there are indications that a fire that destroyed much of the Grange hall in Grants Pass was deliberately set. The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports the fire at the Rogue River Valley Grange building was reported early yesterday. Firefighters say wind quickly fanned the fire, and it took about 40 minutes to get it under control.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A north Portland golfer tells police he responded to four young men who pointed a BB gun at him by ramming them with his golf cart. Police say the golfer told officers that he took the BB gun from his harassers last evening and they ran off. Officers called for a canine unit to help them search the area around Herron Lakes Golf Course. Witnesses said one young man was limping after his encounter with the cart.
