SEATTLE (AP) – Tommy Milone became the first Oakland Athletics rookie to earn eight wins before the All-Star break by beating the Seattle Mariners 1-0 last night. Milone allowed seven hits, struck out five and didn’t walk anyone in his second straight superb outing. Grant Balfour pitched one inning, and Ryan Cook finished in the ninth for his fifth save in seven opportunities.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers have formally extended a qualifying offer to forward Nicolas Batum (bah-TOOM’). Batum is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1. The qualifying offer allows the Blazers to match any contract offer the French forward may receive from another team. Batum has averaged 10.2 points and 3.9 rebounds over four seasons.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Nick Symmonds won his fifth straight U.S. title in the 800 meters by winning at the Olympic trials in 1 minute, 43.92 seconds in Eugene, Ore. Symmonds earns a spot on the U.S. team for the London Games with runner-up Khadevis Robinson, who finished in 1:44.64, and Duane Solomon, who finished in 1:44.65. Symmonds runs for the Oregon Track Club elite.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Alysia Montano won the 800 meters in 1 minute, 59.08 seconds at the U.S. track trials to make the Olympic team. Geena Gall was second in 1:59.24, and Alice Schmidt was third in 1:59.46 last night for the two other spots on the U.S. team for the London Games. Montano, a three-time U.S. champion, led wire-to-wire wearing her trademark flower in her hair.
