SEATTLE (AP) – Jarrod Parker struck out a career-high nine in seven dominant innings, Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EHN’-ehs SEHS’-peh-dehs) and Coco Crisp homered for Oakland’s only two hits and the Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 yesterday. Oakland closer Ryan Cook pitched around an error and a walk in the ninth for his sixth save. Hisashi Iwakuma took the loss.
SEATTLE (AP) – Seattle Mariners starter Kevin Millwood left Wednesday’s game against Oakland after only 2 2/3 innings because of a nagging groin injury. After retiring Kurt Suzuki on a grounder to shortstop, Mariners manager Eric Wedge and trainer Rick Griffin visited the 37-year-old right-hander on the mound and decided to remove him. Hisashi Iwakuma came on in relief.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers are known for draft-night surprises, so it’s anyone’s guess what they’ll do today with four selections, including two lottery picks. The team is rebuilding under new general manager Neil Olshey, who will make his first significant moves for the Blazers since he was hired earlier this month. The Blazers finished 28-38 this season.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Bobby Kersee is requesting that USA Track and Field extend its deadline to give his athletes more time to recover. The coach for Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh is pushing for a Tuesday runoff race to break a third-place tie in the 100, if that’s what the athletes decide. USATF says it’ll wait until after the women’s 200 meters Saturday to finalize plans.
COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho (AP) – A Seattle triathlete has died after suffering a medical emergency during the swimming leg of the Ironman Coeur d’Alene (kohr duh-LAYN’) last Sunday. Kootenai County officials identified the man as 44-year-old Sean Murphy of Seattle. Officials say Murphy was pulled from the water during the swimming phase of the event. He died Tuesday.
