PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say they have released a 19-year-old man who was involved in a fatal fight with a man in southwest Portland, and it will continue to investigate the Wednesday night death. The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Josef Lee Skupa of Portland. Police say that an autopsy showed Skupa died of a single stab wound in the abdomen.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – The Josephine County sheriff’s office is moving out of the courthouse and into the jail. The Grants Pass Daily Courier says the cash-strapped county is considering leasing out the courthouse space. The sheriff’s office was cut from 98 people to 61 after voters rejected a tax increase to make up for the expiration of a federal subsidy for timber counties.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Residents and tourists on the Oregon coast will soon have a quick and easy way to report debris from the Japanese tsunami. Gov. John Kitzhaber announced yesterday that people will be able to call 211 to report tsunami debris. Beginning Friday, the hotline will be staffed during regular business hours and will take recorded messages during other times.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland man has come forward to claim a $4.2 million jackpot from the June 18 Megabucks drawing. The Oregon Lottery said yesterday that Scott Schmitz bought a $5 Quick Pick ticket at Marie’s in Portland, and the winning numbers were 4-9-11-19-23-39. Schmitz will receive 25 annual payments of $168,000 before state and federal taxes.
