MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Timberwolves have waived center Darko Milicic and submitted a formal offer sheet in an attempt to sign Portland forward Nicolas Batum (bah-TOOM’). Owner Glen Taylor said the team expected Batum to sign the offer yesterday, and that the Wolves would continue to talk about a sign-and-trade option for acquiring the restricted free agent. Blazers GM Neil Olshey said Wednesday that he’ll match any offers for Batum, who could fetch up to $50 million over four years.
BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – The president of Nike Inc. says he has decided to change the name of the Joe Paterno Child Development Center, a child care facility at the company’s headquarters. CEO Mark Parker said yesterday that he was deeply saddened by the news coming of the Louis Freeh investigation on the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State. Freeh says Paterno and other top school officials disregarded the welfare of Jerry Sandusky’s victims as they failed to report abuse allegations.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A friend of Coco Crisp has been convicted in Los Angeles of 14 counts of fraud and identity theft for running up $30,000 on the Oakland Athletics outfielder’s credit card without his permission. Marcus Andrews was found guilty of multiple counts of mail fraud and identity theft yesterday during a bench trial. Some of the money was spent in Vancouver, British Columbia. Andrews told authorities he believed he was authorized to use Crisp’s card at one point. Sentencing is set for Aug. 20.
