WESTPORT, Wash. (AP) – Officials are monitoring a large piece of possible tsunami debris about 25 miles off Washington’s coast near Westport. Grays Harbor County officials tell KBKW that it appears to be a barge, about 25 by16 feet, that could have been torn away by the March 2011 tsunami in Japan. NOAA has been tracking the debris move along the coast for about a week. Officials don’t when or where it might wash ashore.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 22-year-old Gresham man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for causing the death of his girlfriend’s baby girl. KATU reports Jeffrey Locker agreed to the sentence under a plea agreement reducing the charge from murder to manslaughter. Locker originally said the 1-year-old suffered a head injury in a fall.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Gervais School District near Salem hopes to head off teacher cuts by selling its three elementary schools. The district hopes to sell the building for nearly $3.7 million and move nearly 500 students into a consolidated kingdergarten-through-12th grade campus, using the existing middle and high schools.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The latest addition to Portland’s food cart community features a caveman diet. Cultured Caveman food cart co-owner Joe Ban tells KOIN agricultural advances are relatively new to the human species. He says bodies are more-fitted for the kind of food people could hunt or gather – animal products, fruits and nuts. The cart’s food fare is protein heavy and light on carbs and sugars.
