PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s ambitious experiment with redesigning the health care delivery system takes a big step forward this week. New “coordinated care organizations” will launch on Wednesday with 260,000 patients. They’ll be taking a more active role in the care of low-income patients on the Oregon Health Plan.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities have identified a man shot and killed by Portland police on Saturday as 28-year-old Billy Wayne Simms. Police say Simms was involved in a number of criminal incidents in the days before he was killed, including the theft of marijuana from a Portland home last week. Simms was shot in the parking lot of a convenience store after he fired on the occupants of another vehicle.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Five more inmates at Oregon’s prison for women have filed lawsuits accusing staff of sexual abuse. The lawsuits were lawsuits filed last week in Marion County Circuit Court seeking $1.1 million for each inmate. A sixth inmate filed a separate suit last month. The Statesman Journal reports that the latest allegations involve a staff member who works in the prison’s kitchen area.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Four kittens died and a fifth is fighting an infection after someone put them inside a bucket of kitty litter and taped it shut. Officials at the DoveLewis emergency animal hospital say the kittens were found Friday night. DoveLewis veterinarian Trish London tells the Oregonian the surviving kitten is expected to make a full recovery.
