MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon secretary of state has dismissed $75 fines levied against Medford’s current and former police chiefs for their comments about the 2010 medical marijuana initiative. Current Chief Tim George and now-retired chief Randy Schoen were fined by the Elections Division for comments they made to the Mail Tribune in 2010 about Measure 74. A judge ruled the state didn’t prove George’s statements were specifically about Measure 74 or the Schoen’s comments were made in his capacity as police chief.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 17-year-old lifeguard from Vancouver who rescued a 12-year-old in the surf near Tillamook was billed nearly $2,600 for a trip to the hospital after the rescue. John Clark is a summer lifeguard in Vancouver, but he was at the Oregon beach last month when he rescued the boy. KOIN reports Clark had a headache so he went with the boy in an ambulance to Tillamook General Hospital. Weeks later he was billed $450 for the ER, $230 for a doctor and $1,900 for the 15-mile ambulance ride.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Eugene City Manager Jon Ruiz is donating his $8,700 pay raise to a foundation that supports the Eugene Public Library. Ruiz said yesterday he’s making the donation in light of a projected $3 million gap in next year’s budget. The Register-Guard reports the city council gave Ruiz a 5 percent merit raise last month that boosted his annual salary to nearly $183,000.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Occupy Portland demonstrators who have been camping outside Portland City Hall have been told to move their belongings by 8 a.m. today or police will take it away. Police handed out notices says the sleeping bags, containers and signs on the sidewalk are a public nuisance. Members of Occupy Portland have been camping in the area since last fall.
