PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A transient sex offender has been indicted in the slaying of a homeless shelter volunteer who invited him to her Portland apartment. The Multnomah County grand jury indicted Mark Beebout yesterday on aggravated murder, sex abuse and assault charges. Court documents obtained by KGW said Niki Powell had been strangled with a shoelace and sexually abused.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Court of Appeals says an intern whose thumb was bitten off by a chimpanzee can’t sue the Chimps Inc. sanctuary because she signed a liability waiver. The appeals court yesterday affirmed a Deschutes County Circuit court decision that Kristen M. Howard cannot go forward with the $828,000 lawsuit she filed.

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – The Coast Guard has rescued two children and two adults who were reportedly being swept out to sea off a north Oregon beach. Petty Officer Nate Littlejohn says a witness reported the four swimmers in distress off Rockaway Beach yesterday. Coast Guard rescuers pulled the swimmers into a boat. The spokesman says the four showed signs of hypothermia but were in good condition.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Bend’s Mountain View High School football team is looking for an edge as it prepares to defend its 5A state title, so the training this summer includes sessions of hot yoga. Defensive coordinator Neil Elshire told KTVZ the idea is for the kids to learn how to focus. One player says the team is bonding by sweating together.
