SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber has declared a statewide emergency that allows National Guard helicopters to be used to help fight wildfires. A spokesman says the state will consider use of guard helicopters on a case by case basis. He says the Guard’s strength is in providing medevac helicopters should firefighters be cut off or injured.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Defense Department says a 22-year-old soldier from Tigard, Ore., has been killed in Afghanistan. Pfc. Andrew Keller died Wednesday when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which is based in Italy.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say six people were cited for trespassing when they refused to leave President Barack Obama’s campaign headquarters in Portland. The Oregonian reports that the demonstrators were part of a larger group that marched to the campaign office yesterday to protest the jailing of Bradley Manning in the Wikileaks case.
SEATTLE (AP) – An Oregon man has his stolen bicycle back after seeing it advertised on Craigslist and setting up an elaborate interstate sting operation. Jake Gillum and two friends drove to Seattle last weekend after creating a fake online persona to disguise that they were coming from Portland, where the bike had been stolen about a week earlier.
