SEATTLE (AP) – Michael Saunders homered, helping Blake Beavan and the Seattle Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins 5-1 yesterday for their fifth straight victory. Seattle completed a three-game sweep and has won 12 of its last 13 at Safeco Field. Minnesota lost its fifth in a row. Saunders’ two-run shot was his career-high 11th homer. He connected in the seventh inning.

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. (AP) – Japan’s Mika Miyazato won the Safeway Classic yesterday for her first victory on the LPGA Tour, finishing with a 2-under 70 to beat Brittany Lincicome and Inbee Park by two strokes. Miyazato finished at 13-under 203 in her wire-to-victory on Pumpkin Ridge’s Ghost Creek Course. Lincicome shot 67, and Park had a 70.

SEATTLE (AP) – Fredy Montero came off the bench to score in the 64th, Eddie Johnson added a clinching goal in the 87th and the Seattle Sounders beat Cascadia rival Vancouver 2-0 in a key game for positioning in the MLS Western Conference playoff chase. Montero found the back of the net Saturday for the eighth time in league play – two minutes after coming into the game.

SEATTLE (AP) – Kristi Toliver scored 22 points and Alana Beard added 18 to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat the short-handed Seattle Storm 82-71 Saturday night for their sixth consecutive win. Rookie Nneka Ogwumike (ah-GWOO’-mih-kay) had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles, which swept the season series 5-0. Candace Parker added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
